SUSAN LIPPER

text: Frederick Barthelme
afterword: Matthew Drutt

Trip is Susan Lipper’s fictional road trip through America – destination, starting point – even date unknown. Lipper’s images and the accompanying texts by writer Frederick Barthelme play against each other throughout the book juxtaposing ideas and sensations. Sophisticated, funny and urbane, trip re-appropriates the documentary tradition to create a new American narrative that casts us adrift in a world of vernacular objects – signs and symbols that read at so many levels.

Susan Lipper’s first book Grapevine received significant critical acclaim and is now recognised as one of the classic photobooks.

Writer, artist, rock musician, Frederick Barthelme is the author of eleven books, the most recent being Bob the Gambler. Matthew Drutt is lead curatorial advisor on photography at the Guggenheim Museum.
