Winner of the 2001 SPORTEL Prize for the Best Illustrated Sports Book
This book is a tribute to great athletes both past and present. Jason Bell has travelled the world to meet and photograph the leading sportsmen and women.
10 months, 102 flights, 32 countries, 149,000 miles, 170 airline meals and 436 rolls of film later, here are the results.
Kate Allenby, Chris Boardman, Mary Peters, Emil Zatopek, Fiona May, Sonia O’Sullivan, Thomas Dvorak, Haile Gebrselassie, Sergei Bubka, Merlene Ottey, Fabrizio Mori, Fanny Blankers-Koen, Paula Ratcliffe, Astrid Kumbernuss, Mark Todd, Naim Suleymanoglu, Franke Dietzsch, Ian Thorpe, Sara Simeioni, Ali Ibrahim Ali, Kipchoge Keino and Sebastian Coe are amongst the seventy five world class athletes who feature in the book.
Well known as a portrait photographer, Bell is more usually to be found taking photos of celebrities like Robbie Williams, Richard Gere, The Corrs, Bjork, George Best and Ben Elton. As he himself says ‘I knew very little about athletes, but I did want to show them away from competition – as ‘ordinary’ people – though of course they are far from ordinary!’
