Truth & Kitty: A Las Vegas Love Story is photographer and filmmaker David Harriman’s fourteen-year portrait of two people surviving on the fringes of America’s most marketed city.

What began in 2012 as an exploration of environmental excess transformed into an unguarded, intimate collaboration. Meeting Truth and Kitty as industrious recyclers on Fremont Street, he stayed close to their lives as circumstances shifted and they found themselves homeless.

The project deepened into a study of love and endurance. It is a record of two people clinging to one another through motels, underpasses, jails, and a mountain cave overlooking the shimmer of the famous Strip – even as the bond between them begins to fray. Around them, a whole community lives in the shadow of a city built on a dream that was never theirs to win.

Unflinching yet tender, Truth & Kitty surfaces the reality of a Las Vegas that has been managed into invisibility.

British photographer David Harriman first picked up a camera aged eleven and soon after built a makeshift darkroom in the family’s tiny attic. That early start shaped a career of deep immersion and long-term, research based projects. His work traces the fault lines – geographic, social, economic – that run through American life. He has photographed across all fifty states and has had solo exhibitions in the UK and US, with work appearing in institutions from the National Portrait Gallery, London, to the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC.

Harriman’s storytelling naturally expanded into documentary film. As a director, his work has screened at international film festivals; as a cinematographer, he has shot a feature documentary with an Academy Award winning director. As well as the book, Truth & Kitty is being released as a 93 minute documentary this autumn.
